Maharashtra Defers Mandatory Marathi Requirement for Auto, Taxi Drivers

The Maharashtra Government has deferred its decision to make working knowledge of Marathi mandatory for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said today following a meeting with representatives of taxi and rickshaw unions in Mumbai. 

Marathi Language Mandate Deferred

According to the Minister, the meeting with various unions was positive, with none of the associations opposing the use of Marathi. However, the unions sought additional time to comply with the proposed language requirement, prompting the Government to defer its decision. 

Sarnaik also assured that the Government would ensure that no driver loses their livelihood due to the policy, while continuing efforts to promote the use of Marathi among public transport operators. 

Marathi Mandatory for Auto Drivers - Still Firm on Decision

The Minister, however, reiterated that the Government remains firm on its decision to make Marathi mandatory for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers. The deferment therefore appears to concern the implementation of the requirement rather than a withdrawal of the policy. 

The development comes amid ongoing legal and public debate over Maharashtra's proposed Marathi proficiency requirement for commercial passenger-vehicle drivers and its implications for livelihood and regulatory powers.
